On this page you can find an up to date list of the main gear I use and it’s split up into kits with each one serving a specific purpose. For example the gear I take with me on a backpacking trip is vastly different to the one I would shoot a client project on. Daily carry is vastly different to a 2 month photo trip round Asia.
It has taken me a very long time to save and invest in the below items. Furthermore, I do this for a living thus can justify higher end products due to tax deductions and because photo / video / travel is my main income. Please do not get into difficult financial positions and only purchase if you can afford it or it is required for a specific purpose. Everything below can be swapped for a cheaper alternatives without much sacrifice.
For most items, if you click on the image, it will take you to this product (or similar if no longer available) on Amazon, B&H or Moment. These are affiliate links and for you it should not cost any different. For me it means I get a tiny % of any purchase you make. Also by clicking any of the links, Amazon will still give me a small kickback even if you purchase something else. So for the smaller items that are not linked, simply click on a camera, then search for the item and I will still get a small commission.
Everyday Carry
This is what comes with me everywhere I go without exception. Whether I go to the Post Office or to the gym, the Ricoh and iPhone are on me. Between these two, I can get great quality photos and videos while remaining pocketable. The Ricoh also comes with me on all my trips for this purpose. The phone too, obviously.
Minimal Camera Kit
This is what I bring with me when I want to keep my set up simple and minimal, yet still get great results. The Leica Q3 is a perfect minimal carry camera while the DJI Action 5 is a great video solution. This is what I take with me on family holidays, minimal backpacking trips and anytime photography isn’t the primary reason for the trip.
Main Camera Kit
This is the main kit I use for all my photo and video both at home and while on the road. Specifically on trips that are expensive or to locations I won’t have the freedom to visit whenever I want. The goal here is to have all basis covered with backup options. Having tried many different combinations of lenses and focal lengths, I found this to be the most useful in almost any situation.
The main body is the Sony A7RV. This is the workhorse and the camera I use for 90% of all photo and video. The Sony A7CII is a smaller video camera that doubles up as a great backup photo camera. If something were to happen to the A7R, this will do everything I need. In total I will bring between 3 and 5 lenses depending on where I am going. Three zooms and two primes.
The first zoom is the Sony 24-50mm f2.8. This lens is compact and starts at 50mm, meaning it stays the most compact when set to the focal lengths I shoot the most. The second zoom is a 16-25mm f2.8 which I will use for any wide angle shots but mostly for video and behind the scenes. The final zoom is a 70-200mm f4. This is my telephoto lens that also doubles up as a macro. I don’t shoot telephoto in low light and I seldom go lower than f4.
The first prime is a Sigma 35mm f2 and the second is a Sigma 90mm f2.8. The 35mm can be used as a great walk around lens while the 90mm can be paired with the 24-50mm for a compact telephoto solution in a city. These two primes offer a small / light solution while also serving as a backup for the zooms. I also have the 50mm prime which I don’t use too often due to the 24-50. With that said, if I wanted to shoot at night and was happy to stick with 50mm, this is the lens I would pick.
Camera Accessories
My most used accessories are below. Obviously I have loads of odd bits here and there, but what you see here is used all the time.
Bags / Travel Stuff
Finding the right bag is probably one of the hardest tasks out there. I have spent thousands buying different bags, using them from a month to a year and realising they no longer work for me. Below is what I currently use and what works for me. Of course not all of them come on all the trips and it really depends on the circumstances. Some trips I will only use the small sling and the 26L bag. Other trips I will use the two backpacks. Sometimes a duffel and a backpack work best and other times the larger outdoor bag and a sling is what’s needed. There is no right or wrong, however the selection below covers every scenario.
